About Me
I am a father, husband, and son. I work on airplanes but nature is my passion. I recently attempted a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail that lasted four days. So now I am on the 20 year plan!
Every journey has a first step… and a last… I’m between the two… Where are you?
Hey! I’m very excited to hear about your adventure in 2008. Your blog is so on my Google Reader subscriptions.
My email address is vicky@tgaw.com. Please contact me as you and your mother’s planning progresses. When you come through the great Commonwealth of Virginia and get close to the Pearisburg/Blacksburg/Catawba/Roanoke area, I’ll be happy to meet up with you guys, shuttle you to pick up extra supplies, treat you to dinner…or perhaps provide a place for a hot shower?
Best of Luck!

Hello!
I performed a Google on “thru-hike” and “type 2″ and your site appeared. It is great to read the words of kindred spirit! I am in the process of planning a thru-hike in 2008 myself (tentative start – March 1).
My doc gave me the news that I was borderline type-2 a couple of days ago. I used to be an avid mountain biker, but job, school, and an incredible sweet tooth brought me to 320 big ones. I started a low-carb diet at the request of my physician and hope to get down to the low-mid 200s by next year.
I had intended to start the hike this year, but the savings account wasn’t quite where it needed to be. So far, I have purchased and tested most of my gear, put the monthly bills on autopilot and found someone to house-sit / take care of the cats for six months. Now just have to work on the weight and count the days ’til the resignation letter.
Great work on the site! All the best to you both!

Wow!!! Thank you !!! Let me say I’m glad you were caught early. That gives you the absolute best chance to beat it back down!! All the best for the weight loss! I had to do the same. It is very do able and you will feel great!!!
I love that we are not the only ones out there and that we are hiking the same year!! Maybe we will run into each other on the trail! Or Maybe Trail Days as you are leaving a month ahead of us! The best to you!!!!!!
I hope that we can be of some help to you. Please stay in touch with us. Feel free to email me!

Hadn’t thought about that. Good suggestion! In fact, I hadn’t even had that form of tool cross my mind. It think it would be very good for her! Thanks!

I live really close to the AT. I was just on it this past weekend (NJ/NY). I was hikng along in the hot sun, wondering if and how someone might hike the long path and then blog about it. And then I find you are doing it. Good for you. It is a big committment but you sound like you are ready.

Wishing I could do a thru-hike – I can’t take that amount of time off work. I broke it up into two week sections that I plan to start hiking next year.
I finally found someone to hike with me (my BF is not interested) – of course, he wants to start in ME, the hardest part of all!
Your mom’s gear list is helpful. I have been wondering how to get my pack weight down considerably.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting! Glad to hear that you can do it in two week periods and that you found someone to do it with!!!
There are many ways to get your pack weight down. One of the first things to understand about that process is your base load. This is everything you will take with you that is NOT consumable. Consumable items are water and food, obviously, but don’t forget fuel and toilet paper. Think “anything that will be consumed on a daily basis”. After that, focus on what you don’t need or most likely won’t use. Whiteblaze.net and backpackinglight.com are great websites with tons!! of information on it. Email me if you are having trouble or want more info!!!! I have put my email back on the front page. Have fun!!!!

Best of luck! I thru-hiked in 1999 and it was incredible. There was only one time when I quit but a few days of recovery (had lost 10 lbs due to food poisoning somewhere in the middle of Pennsylvania) off trail and I luckily changed my mind. Finishing it was a true test of endurance but what a great feeling. It is already 9 years later and I have walked a million miles since, but this time of the year, I think often of those days. I will be cheering you all on from afar as I live in Tokyo, Japan now.

Hi there,
My names Kevin and i happened across your website mythruhike.wordpress.com. I found your posts really interesting. I also have a bit of a passion for the outdoors myself and really appreciate it when i come across a site that is more than just a bunch of adsense. I’m looking for relevant link partners and I run a website called APEQS which is a blog about the newest and coolest outdoor equipment such as hiking gear, kayaking and rock climbing equipment. What i’m hoping to do is find sites that offer interesting articles on these particular categories and set up a link exchange as I know my readers would be very interested in visiting your site. If you would like to be a link partner with http://www.apeqs.com please respond and i will place your link on the site with your requested anchor text.
P.S. Couldn’t find your email address so i had to leave this comment.
Thanks
Kevin

Hello, I found your site though Google as it is related to my own travel site. I wanted to ask if you would be interested in a link exchange as I have some high ranking travel blogs many with a PageRank of 3 or more.
I have a list of my sites here: http://www.migranchile.com/mysites.html
I have been swapping links for while now and have found it very beneficial to search engine rankings for everyone. If you are interested just mail me back and I can show you my sites and hopefully give you some links asap.
Thanks for your time.
